La Misma Luna
Saturday, August 23rd, 2008Looking for a good movie that can help your Spanish language studies? Check out the critically-acclaimed La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon). This Spanish-language film, directed by award winner Patricia Riggen, follows a young boy’s struggle to reunite with his mother. She illegally crosses the border from Mexico into the United States to find work while her son stays behind in Mexico. But when the young boy’s grandmother dies, he decides he has waited long enough and begins a journey northward, across the border, to find his mother in Los Angeles.
Aside from telling a truly touching story, La Misma Luna holds a wealth of knowledge for viewers. It paints a colorful picture of Hispanic culture in both Mexico and the United States. You will see celebrations, from birthdays to weddings, and aspects of everyday life for Hispanics in America. La Misma Luna also reveals the hardships of immigrants and the difficult choices they face everyday. No matter how you feel about illegal immigration, you cannot help but sympathize with these characters and the great struggles they face.
Most important of all, La Misma Luna is all in Spanish! Watch it with subtitles, but make sure to listen to what they’re saying. Try not to depend on reading to follow the movie. Then watch it again without subtitles, using context and memory to figure out what they’re saying. There’s nothing better for tuning your ear and working on your accent than listening to real dialog in Spanish. Hope you enjoy!
